I am an enormous fan of the Horizon franchise. I also love LEGO, even having worked for them for 5 years. These two things together though, was something unexpected. I adored the Tall Neck set from a few years ago, but a full video game was something I never expected to happen, and was hesitant about it after it was announced

This game is structured like a lot of the previous LEGO games are, working on a mission based structure with a hub world you can explore and customize as time goes on. I thought the levels were absolutely gorgeous, and none of them ever overstayed its welcome. They translated the look and feel of Horizon into LEGO way better than I thought they ever could. My favorite part though is that the old buildings strewn across the landscape are actually existing LEGO modular sets, which was a really fun easter egg detail

The weakest point of this game is the moment to moment. The gameplay isn’t bad by any means, its more so boring. I understand this is for kids, and a lot of the other LEGO games are also a one button masher, but I feel like its a lot more prevalent here because the combat is the main focus. There are some cool parts, like the gadgets, but I found myself losing interesting after hitting the halfway point

Having the original voice cast voicing completely new versions of these characters was so interesting, and you can tell everyone is having a lot of fun doing such a different take of their characters, especially Ashley Burch. Just like the environments, the characters are really well translated into the child friendly style, and I loved these takes. Lance Reddick was dearly missed though, even if the new VO does a solid job. May he rest in peace

I would recommend at least giving this game a try. Its got some fun moments, and its a refreshing look on the world of Horizon. You wont have the time of your life, but I think you’ll be satisfied as a relatively short ride that is this game.

My final rating is a 7/10
